10 Brazilian Videogames To Start 2020 In An Epic Way

I don't like to make lists but this one is a special exception. I created a list with 10 Brazilian games that I loved a lot to play in last years. As a Brazilian guy, nothing fairer than talking a little bit about the games created in my country. You can find any of them easily in Steam or the mainstream consoles. I tried to put a small description of each one with a trailer. You can search on Google to know more about them.

    1.Horizon Chase Turbo (Aquiris)

Horizon Chase Turbo is a modern take on the 90s old-school racers that we loved the most such as Out Run or Top Gear. It's the first game in analogic Blu-ray launched in Brazilian Territory. Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, Xbox One

    2.Chroma Squad (Behold Studios)

Chroma Squad is a tactical role-playing video game influenced by tokusatsu TV shows, particularly the Super Sentai and Power Rangers franchises. Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Android, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Macintosh operating systems, macOS.

    3.Celeste (MiniBoss)

Celeste is platform game in which players control a girl named Madeline in a beautiful, challenging and metaphorical struggle against anxiety and depression (I really love this one). Platforms: Linux, macOS, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

    4.Rainy Day (Thais Weiller & Amora B.)

A short and reflective experience about depression on a rainy day. A game to be played right in your browser. Click here. Platform: Internet browsers.

    5.Shiny (Garage 227)

Awesome art, robots and puzzles. I'll not say anything more, but Shiny was one of the most immersive experiences I had with a game in the last years. Check the trailer below and try to play. Platforms: PC, Xbox One and PS4.

    6.Blazing Chrome (JoyMasher)

Blazing Chrome is a classic co-op run 'n gun with an original arcade feel. Players can choose between Mavra, the badass human resistance, soldier or Doyle, the groovy rebel robot, to kick some metal ass. Are you a Contra lover? You'll love this game. Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

7.Aritana and the Twin Masks (DUAIK)

second adventure of a universe that explores even more the forest's mysteries, based in the brazilian mythology and culture. With a new weapon, a bow and arrow, the adventure extends gameplay possibilities, bringing 3D movement, big sceneries in open landscapes to explore and powers that helps the player solve several puzzles. Explore a huge lost temple and find artifacts that can be mixed in many special potions and prepare yourself to save the tree of life. Platforms: Xbox One.

    8.Sky Racket (Double Dash Studios)

Sky Racket is a mixture of the casual fun from Block Breakers and the awesome action from Shoot 'Em Ups, which makes it the first Shmup Breaker. Platforms: Microsoft Windows, Linux, macOS, IBM PC compatible.

    9.Tamashii (Vikintor)

Tamashii it's a platform game that generates a sense of strangeness for its gameplay and layout. I can't express in words why I liked this game so much. I think it was his strangeness that made me find an experience interesting. The dark ambience soundtrack with the lovecraftian/gigerian creatures/scenarios are the high points of the game for me. About the developer: Vikintor is a Brazilian independent artist and game creator; his work it's mostly about Metaphysical punk, Transgressive Gnosticism and Philosophically subversive themes. Making small and medium-size games with the proposal to conceive experimental interactive medium of expression (text from author's site). Platform: Microsoft Windows.

    10.Lenin - The Lion (Lornyon)

Lenin is an albino lion, the only one of his kind, and because of that he feels insecure and constantly discouraged. In fact. Worse, his mother does not understand why his son was born this way, and the whole village despises him and treats him cruelly. At school, he suffers bullying and can't concentrate on class. Now, hopeless about life, certain situations seem to awaken in Lenin something that is not of everyone's reality, but only of his. Something he will discover to be the part of something else. Platform: Microsoft Windows.

    Bonus Stage: Mind Alone (Sioux)

Time for self-promotion! MIND ALONE is an experimental mobile game that uses puzzle mechanics to create a dark narrative about somebody trapped in their own mind. Each puzzle is a memory and the player needs to solve them to find hints about how it happened. I created this game in a partnership with Sioux, a Brazilian gaming publisher. Platforms: iOS and Android.

Hope you enjoy and happy new year.

HOTT 52 - Battle 6 - Send In The Trolls!

A fun battle of Humans vs Orcs that suddenly and convincingly ended, this time with all elements filled in! I finished my Saxons that would become my human warband elements. All painted with colors and shield designs from my Etinerra campaign world.

That's something that I've done with all of my HOTT 15mm figures - is to paint them in colors and styles from the campaign. It makes it fun for me, although I'm finding that what I have is duplicate 25mm and 15mm armies. Oh darn. Lots of figures on my table...

Battlefield Terrain was randomly determined with a different method this time. I (re)discovered a set of DBA 2 Solo rules that I'm going through to see how I like them and can adapt them to HOTT. Here's the link:  https://solowargamer.wordpress.com/2019/11/05/solo-dba-rulz/

Forces randomly determined from my Etinerra army lists.

    Humans (Militia/Regular)
    Spear-General x1
    Spear x3
    Warband x2
    Riders x2
    Knights x2
    Shooters x2
    Orcs (Regular/Militia) - defending
    Blade-General x1
    Blade x3
    Spear x4
    Warband x2
    Riders x2
    Behemoth x1

I diced to see whom could substitute regular elements with fantasy elements and the Orcs were given the option. So, I took the riders and traded them for Troll Behemoths! These buggers are really a hoot, styled after old irreverent Warhammer-esque figures. That one on the right is definitely digging for gold in that big schnozz there!

    On with the battle!

Orc Warchief Al-Lozburg lined up his troops at dawn to face the wretched humans that were approaching his fort. He put his trolls on his left flank with hopes they could do some damage that way.

Confident in his troops abilities, and wanting to ensure good battle matchups, Major Osmond put his knights at the center of his line and his riders to oppose the trolls, perhaps to flank or rear attack them even. He assigned his rowdy militia men, hardy mountaineers and hillsmen who were quick with the axe, spear and spirit bottle, to the left, spying a band of wood goblins opposite. The armies marched quickly towards each other with little maneuver, "quick to blood" as they say.

    "Oo'er, fancy a bit of horse-flesh, Bob?"

"Shaddup, Bob, there's tasty, sweet manflesh atop those horses, we et them fust an' then we et the horsies!"

The army lines crashed together and the orcs pushed the attacking humans back. Dismayed at seeing his lines so fragmented, Major Osmond pulled his forces back to regroup.

The aggressive Bestials pressed the attack, with the trolls racing forward to smash the militia riders, but the hardy horsemen held on against the fierce attack! Seeing an opportunity, Major Osmond sent his riders to flank and he caught the trolls in a deadly cross attack! The trolls, reeling from fire and swords, lost their interest in man/horse flesh and fled the field!

Undeterred, the orcs pushed back and a long battle ensued. Back and forth, the lines went. Orc casualties mounted, but they continued to press the attack.

Suddenly, when it seemed this blood-letting would drag on till the end of day, the humans struck decisive blows! Two of the feared Orc Blade units fell to the militia Riders and Spearmen, while the other Spear troops drove off a unit of Orc Spear! (In one bound! The most losses I've seen by one side in a bound in quite awhile!)

Seeing two-thirds of his forces gone, Al-Lozburg was forced to abandon his earthworks, giving the humans the victory!

    Humans win decisively versus Bestials (Orcs/Goblins) 4 - 16G.

As for my new Human Warband elements? They spent the entire game fighting back and forth across the battlefield with no resolution! I'm pretty sure both sides were happy that the battle was over! (Or they were pissed because they didn't get a chance to finish the job!)

    THINGS I (RE)LEARNED
A mounted unit can pass through a friendly unit if going in same or opposite direction. Makes sense. Gives me some ideas for future positioning and using mounted.

    THINGS I'M PLANNING
I've gone ahead and made a mega-order to Alternative Armies for their 15mm Imperial Elf and High Elf HOTT Armies, enough figures for several stands of Chaos Men as well as some PC-like figures for Heroes/Clerics. That will give me roughly the equivalent armies/combinations for both 15 and 25mm conflicts with various rules. And monsters!

I'm also looking at the campaign rules from HOTT and my existing wargames campaign. I'm considering a "mini-campaign" using an adaptation of the HOTT campaign system. It might provide a fun afternoon with friends and lead to some interesting resolutions in my game world!

Gaming At Little Wars In April!

Little Wars is the annual wargaming convention produced by the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society of the Midwest (HMGS-Midwest). It's a great time and very inexpensive too. $40.00USD for three days of great miniatures games of all types - can't beat that!

I'm the guy who usually runs fantasy games in the middle of a lot of historical gaming (Heh) and this year is no different. I'm running a game a day, starting at 11am each day. Here's what's on tap.

Rescue of Hommlet - Friday, 11am - Grand Ballroom Space 7

If you've been reading my blog for the past few weeks, you've seen the preparation I'm making for my GaryCon debut of this Greyhawk-related scenario. Set at the beginning of the venerable module T1 - Village of Hommlet, it sets up an RPG/wargame hybrid scenario. The picture to the left there is the model I've made of the Moathouse. I'm doing this same game at Little Wars

The blurb reads: A discrete summons has reached your ears, for the good people of Hommlet are in fear for their lives! A militia of foul brigands from Nulb have been spotted near the old Moathouse of ill reputation! What evil lurks there and beyond? Find out, brave heroes, using Chainmail (and a bit of Original D&D)

Chaos War in the Dungeon! - Saturday, 11am - Grand Ballroom Space 9

For the fourth year in a row, I'm running Chaos Wars at Little Wars! This year, I'm bringing some fun terrain and an interesting scenario - fighting a desperate battle underground! This isn't your usual dungeon crawl, this a dungeon BRAWL!

The blurb reads: Go underground in dark tunnels and chambers filled with horrors or treasures! Brave Lawful allies fight against foul Bestials! Who will emerge victorious? Fight in a unique terrain setup using Chaos Wars fantasy miniature wargaming rules and all genuine Ral Partha armies!

HOTT Times in Etinerra - Sunday, 11am - Grand Ballroom Space 19

I've paid attention to the games being played at Little Wars and surprisingly, DBA and HOTT are not usually on the event list. This year, I believe that I'm the ONLY DBA/HOTT game there. Which will be great! I'll be bringing my 15mm Human and Orc/Goblin armies and letting players bash each other to pieces!

Here's the blurb: As the Orc and Goblin forces assembled on the horizon, the Human commander gazed nervously from the roof of her castle Stronghold. Would the forces of Weal prevail against the army of Woe? Find out with a fun game of Hordes of the Things set in the Etinerra campaign world. Wizards! Monsters! Oh my!

There's plenty of other great gaming to be had - some SciFi, a lot of historicals. This convention is usually how I scratch my historical itches, so that I don't go and buy a bunch of games and armies and end up never having time for anything else! This year, I'm playing in an American War of Independence game, An Axis & Allies Global game, and a Third Crusades game. And the dealer hall usually vacuums a load of cash from my wallet and credit cards as well.

Can't wait! I hope I'll see you there, come say Hi!
